When you think of Fort Lauderdale, beaches come to mind, not rivers per say. Fort Lauderdale is the sister city to Venice, Italy being known as the Venice of Americas for its network of Intracoastal canals and waterways. If you are looking for something to do rather than lounging around the pool or on the beach there are plenty of nice features of spending an afternoon around the local historic rivers. The Riverwalk (goriverwalk.com) is a quiet pedestrian path that runs along part of the Tarpon River in the heart of downtown. You could start inland at the westernmost end that leads off SW Fourth Court and meander east, savoring the beautiful views of the river along this mile-long trail. It finishes on the famous Las Olas Boulevard – turn right and continue east along the main strip, ducking into many of the fine art galleries and beachy boutiques along the way. Check out the New River as it flanks Las Olas and take a tour of the Stranahan House, the oldest building in Fort Lauderdale. The New River has a criminal background where pirates, rum-runners and scammers would sail along these Intracoastal passages. How exciting to be walking along the same waters today where pirates raised their sails.
Last weekend you might have noticed about 1,000 four-legged local friends walking along the riverfront in the heart of downtown Fort Lauderdale for the Annual Humane Society of Broward County “Walk for The Animals” event. The pathway is pet friendly. If you stroll along the meandering path and go West, you could head to the Broward Center of the Performing Arts and catch a show or venture into the Museum of Discovery and Science for an action-packed day. This weekend catch the Arts Ballet Theatre show Papillon the Butterfly or the Miami City Ballet is performing there too this weekend. Along your walk you won’t miss the beautiful historic New River Inn Museum of History constructed in 1905 originally as a hotel nestled in the heart of the Riverwalk Park on the New River. There are both historical and ghost tours for the choosing along with art exhibits. Drive a little North and you will encounter Middle River where there is a private 8- bedroom, 10,000 square foot modern day estate castle. Worth the visit.
Across from the Fort Lauderdale castle is a brand-new condominium called RIVA.
